As of January 1, 2021, UnitedHealthcare has dropped Montefiore from its network.
You may have recently read about United’s latest update touting its intent to reach an agreement with Montefiore by proposing a compromise to end disruption and provide significant rate increases to Montefiore.
Unfortunately United fails to mention Montefiore’s offer of an extension, that would immediately restore access at the rate increases United agreed to in our 2018-2020 contract and are in line with our other insurance partner contracts. It’s also convenient for United not to tell you about its insistence that Montefiore receives no increase indefinitely under its February 11 proposal until a contract is executed. This will only incentivize United to delay signing an agreement to prevent Montefiore from receiving a rate increase for as long as possible. Additionally, United is also requesting the ability to recoup money retroactively to January 1, 2018 that has already been paid to us.
That’s not what compromise or partnership looks like. Aetna, Cigna, and Empire BCBS have come to the table to renew early with mutually beneficial multi-year agreements that further not just their own, but Montefiore’s mission to provide the best care to our local communities. While these payors are working to increase access for all their members including some of our most vulnerable patients on Medicare and Medicaid, United is proposing reductions in the rates used to care for these patients, creating even more burdens on our communities.
The United update also does not mention how it has no interest in investing in our communities during this pandemic, or that it’s appropriate to cut off patients’ access to their trusted doctors all in the name of increasing market share and growing profits. As Michael McGuire, United CEO of NY was notably quoted in Politico saying “Those profits are national profits. We don’t spread those around.” United is putting national profits above New Yorkers’ healthcare.
We need your help to get United to come back to the table to end this disruption. Montefiore wants to prevent delayed care and higher out-of-pocket costs, but we can’t do it without United being willing to reach a fair deal.
With exception of emergency services and those patients who apply and qualify for Continuity of Care, patients with United insurance will lose in-network coverage to the following hospitals and associated doctors beginning January 1, 2021, because of United:
- Montefiore Medical Center
- Montefiore Mount Vernon
- Montefiore New Rochelle
- Montefiore Nyack
- Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital
- White Plains Hospital
We are working diligently to bring United back to the table to negotiate a fair deal that will allow Montefiore a place in its network. Rather than joining us in meaningful negotiations to prevent disruption in care for the 60K patients with United insurance, United waited more than a month to respond with a proposal that was focused almost entirely on United’s drive for profits. Throughout our continued months’ long negotiation with United, you – our patients – have been our central focus.
We have seen firsthand how important it is to have in-network access to the doctors and hospitals you trust, especially in times like these. We are continuing to work toward a new contract that guarantees access for you and all those who need care. Fair contracts from insurers, like United, help us ensure we can continue to be here for our community and be around for years to come.
